Utility Tips

Taking measures to boost a home’s energy efficiency could significantly increase its value when it comes to be sold, according to figures from the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC).

The organisation found that improving the grade of a home’s Energy Performance Certificate from G to E or D to B may result in an extra £16,000 being added to its sale price.

On average, values go up by 14 per cent where measures to improve efficiency are evident in the estate agent’s notes.

Energy and climate change minister Greg Barker said: “We have long known the benefits of making energy-saving improvements to the home, but this study is real evidence of the huge potential rewards.”

It comes after a poll by Survation and the Mirror discovered that 56 per cent of homeowners are concerned about how much their utilities cost.

Cutting bills could be achieved by something as simple as adding more loft insulation or putting energy saving blinds on the windows.

Energy saving window blinds fitted throughout your home can save up to 15% of your annual fuel bills, a significant amount and a figure that will certainly appeal to prospective property purchasers.
